Dear Honorable Governor Ivey of the state of Alabama,
With all due respect ma’am, what are you thinking? Who is pulling your puppet strings? I realize you are hard pressed by people who say things like, “shut it down!” I’ve heard that over and over by people who don’t realize that hiding away in fear isn’t the answer to this pandemic.
I realize the virus cases are going up, but we knew this would happen. And the sad truth is, it must happen in order to develop immunity. Slowing it is a good idea to help our medical community, but it is very apparent the masks are not slowing it.
I am not a conspiracy theorist, so please don’t misunderstand me. As a matter of fact, I am one of the most logical, level-headed females you could ever meet, as I strive to see things from both sides of a story. Let’s get real though, the majority of us are not dying from this virus.
Multiple people my son works with got the virus. ALL of them have come back saying that either they had no symptoms, or they were mild. A co-worker with cancer who tested positive came back saying this is all hype and nothing to be afraid of. The death toll numbers are being played with and the media is hyping this up to be sure people continue to be in fear.
A HARSH REALITY
With that said, back at the beginning of the year, my son had a fever so high he forgot to check out of school and rushed home to get me to take him to the hospital. He thought he was dying from what we now believe to have been the Covid-19 virus. After having to call 911 to check my 17-year-olds heart on my way to the hospital, I take this very seriously.
After he got better, I also had symptoms of the virus. Five months later I am finally getting some relief of those symptoms. Due to being in lockdown, we got the antibodies test too late to know if we had the virus or not, but one of the symptoms I still have is breathlessness.
I’ve also had friends lose their loved ones to the virus, so believe me when I say I know what this virus can do. It is serious enough that we should definitely take precautions…precautions that make sense.
This virus has been here for a long time. I believe it is safe to say that most of us have been exposed to it by now-probably when we were not even wearing a mask. A mask isn’t some magical solution to getting things back to normal. It’s just simply a security blanket people are holding onto because it makes them feel better. One minute we are LIED TO and told wearing masks don’t work because the medical community needed them, and the next we are being FORCED to wear them. What gives?
A mask is designed to protect the person wearing it. Homemade masks are only good for keeping you from spreading sputum if you cough. Covering your mouth and then washing your hands would give you the same results. N95 masks are the only ones designed to protect you from inhaling toxins. They DO NOT protect others from inhaling the toxins you breathe out. THE MASK ONLY PROTECTS YOU from the toxins you breathe in.
We are not protecting the public by wearing a mask, we are protecting OURSELVES. Coronavirus particles are tiny. A standard homemade mask isn’t going to protect a person from tiny particles such as this. Most homemade cotton masks only filter out about 28% of tiny particles, which means you are breathing in or out 72% of virions (that’s enough to get sick or to get others sick).
All year long I’ve struggled for air. Now I’m told I have to wear a mask “In order to keep others safe,” despite my logic and educational resources telling me that is not how a mask is designed to work, and after being told the opposite of that just three months ago.
I read that those with medical conditions such as mine are exempt from wearing one, but I am literally not allowed to enter a public place without it.
I can carry a letter from my doc, once I get one, but what will I do until then? Will I be arrested for sitting at the park without a mask on, out in the open air? Will I be fined for taking it off so I can catch my breath? In other words, how exactly does having medical issues “exempt” me?
I agree that a mask protects the person wearing it from projected sputum landing on their mouth or nose, but it doesn’t protect them from the sputum landing on the rest of their body and then spreading it to their face with their own hands. A virus is spread mostly by ignorance and common sense seems to be a thing of the past.
Surgical masks or 3M filters are what you need to filter particles but most are designed to filter the larger particles. An N95 respirator is the only one designed for smaller particles and gives a tight seal around the mouth, so it keeps you from breathing in toxins. However, we are told to save those for healthcare workers.
Here’s the kicker- if you touch the outside of ANY mask, you are touching the virions they filtered out. Doctors say masks are supposed to help you remember to not touch your face, but I see people constantly tugging at them and pulling them down. The masks are just pacifiers.
The percentage of critical cases is less than about 1% of those infected.
There are almost 8 billion people in this world. Out of that 8 billion, about 14 million have been infected, or .00175 %.
It is estimated that about 3% of the people in the world are immunocompromised. However, that is only the worst cases and doesn’t include people who have less fatal immune diseases. Since there is no way to accurately measure how many people are immunocompromised, let’s say we double that number to be fair. That’s about 480-million people.
I haven’t had much sleep due to insomnia issues, but if my math skills check out, I figure about .000124% of immunocompromised people are in critical condition.
That means the number of Covid-19 patients who are in critical condition is currently .0000075% of the world’s population. If you count only the US population, the numbers work out to .00005%.
If the main people who become critically ill with this virus are those who have compromised immune systems, assuming that everyone has been exposed to the virus by now, that means that about 475 million of those with compromised immune systems are still healthy after having been exposed.
That’s a pretty good number. So, why do we have to wear a mask again?
I keep hearing “slow the spread,” and I would love to help do that, but Governor your advice of “wear anything” over your mouth lets me know you are giving everyone a pacifier instead of a solution. It’s irrational, no matter how much the media says it works. Pacifiers only work to shut a baby up.
I am not one of those people who complain every time a new rule is set. As a matter of fact, I would consider myself easy to get along with and compliant. But I feel that I’m being forced to follow rules that make no sense, not for the sake of the unhealthy or elderly, but for the sake of those who whine and complain that you are not shutting things down again.
I’m currently working from home, so I stay home most of the time. I really do not mind wearing a mask for a short period of time when I go out. But when I do something that takes a great deal of time, I need to be able to breathe while I am there. I have been struggling for air without a mask on for a long time now.
I googled, “Why did Gov Ivey make wearing masks mandatory,” and the very first thing that popped up was an article that quoted you saying, “Do the right thing and wear a mask.” The right thing for whom? You are forcing us to protect ourselves.
You claim to be a “Christian” leader. Alabamians NEED a Christian leader; but is it right, or Christian to put people in jail for not wearing a piece of cloth over their face? A piece of cloth that isn’t working?
Scientists have proven that Coronavirus will NOT spread in vape clouds unless the e-cigarette user coughs when they exhale. So, I can spread it when I “talk” or “sing at church,” but vape users won’t spread it when they aggressively blow vape juice out of their lungs?
Much of the information we are given contradicts common sense.
I believe that my immune system will get stronger if I don’t wear a mask because that is how the immune system works. It fights viruses and bacteria. They say wearing a mask doesn’t lower oxygen levels. In a healthy individual this may be true. But there have been warnings for people with asthma and medical conditions saying it is NOT recommended. Please tell us what exempts the unhealthy from having to wear a mask, when they now can’t go anywhere without one on?
My family and I go out at least once a day. Before this was made mandatory, as much as 90% of the people I saw were wearing a mask. As a matter of fact, they’ve become a design accessory, of sorts. Why enforce it? It isn’t keeping the numbers from rising, obviously.
I realize you can find contradictory information on the internet or television that says the numbers are not rising in the areas where masks are being worn, but I beg to differ.
Jefferson County enacted a face mask ordinance on June 29th and the numbers INCREASED from 4,053 to 8,105 in 18 days. THE MASKS DO NOT STOP THE SPREAD OF THIS VIRUS. It still ranks as the one of the counties with the most cases and the most deaths (although the death count is a lie too).
In the state of Alabama there is now a penalty of up to $500 and/or jail time for not wearing a mask, but you, my dear Governor, said the goal is not to have to “enforce” the penalty. You said the goal is “just to wear a mask.”
Should I “just wear a mask” if I already feel like I’m suffocating? Should I “just wear a mask” if I am willing to pull it off of my nose so I can breathe, like most people are doing? What are my limits? How far can I go to meet the letter of the law?
For those of you who don’t know me, allow me to explain in short what I am going through…
I have stress induced asthma. I am allergic to every inhaler the docs have prescribed. I also had a wreck in 2012 that, along with degenerative issues, caused significant damage to my spine and neck. I have fluid on my spine directly behind my lungs and when the inflammation gets worse and swelling occurs, my breathing issues increase.
I also have venous insufficiency. For those who don’t know what that is, it’s where the veins in my legs don’t return blood back to my heart properly, causing a lack of blood supply to my upper body. Poor blood supply to the lungs causes breathing issues as well.
How can you look at someone like me and say, “Put your mask on?”
What kind of coldhearted requirement is that? If protecting the sick is really what this is all about, why are the sick not being given an answer as to how to get around the mask order? People will literally tell you to leave their establishment now if you are not wearing a mask! I don’t mind wearing a mask for a short time, but when I have to be somewhere for an hour or two, I can’t do it.
I’ve read where healthy people have stated, “It’s uncomfortable to wear a mask, get over it.” If “uncomfortable” was my issue, I could get over it. But “uncomfortable” is clothing that fits too tightly. Uncomfortable is the heat being set too high in your house. Uncomfortable is your dog insisting on sitting in your lap while you are busy trying to do something else.
Wearing a mask for someone who already can’t breathe well isn’t uncomfortable, it is almost unbearable. And if that sounds dramatic, so be it, but I know what I feel. If wearing a mask, is what it takes to keep me out of jail and make people feel better, I’ll do it. BUT IT ISN’T RIGHT TO FORCE IT ON ME.
Just to prove my point ever further, the CDC has said that those who have difficulties breathing should “NOT” wear a mask. But I ask again, how do we obtain that exemption so that we can continue to live normal lives doing normal things?
The average person’s immune system fights off the virus once its contracted. That’s what they are not telling you because that doesn’t make great news.
We didn’t shut the world down when we had the swine flu pandemic in 2009 even though CDC estimated that 151,700-575,400 people worldwide died from (H1N1)pdm09 virus infection during the first year the virus circulated. Those who were concerned about getting sick wore a mask. No one made it a law to wear one.
I am really just being dramatic to prove a point. This year has proven ridiculous and I’m tired of pampering those in fear.
They tell us don’t wear a mask, then they say do wear a mask and people like myself struggle to be compliant. They are treating us like puppets, and I am asking you to put an end to it, dear Governor. Listen to God for your instructions. From Him comes wisdom. Thank you for your service to our great state, but please help to stop the nonsense and the fear.
I feel this is a pertinent scripture for the time we live in: “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore, take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day…” (Eph 6:12-13)
